Urological Procedures performed by Professor Vasdev
Professor Vasdev specialises in the diagnosis and management of Urological Malignancies (Prostate Cancer, Bladder Cancer, Kidney Cancer, Testicular Cancer and Retroperitoneal Malignancies); Robotic, Laparoscopic and Open surgery; Robotic Prostatectomy;Robotic / Open Cystectomy; Robotic Intracorporeal Ileal Conduit formation and neobladders formation; Robotic Partial Nephrectomy; Robotic Pyeloplasty and Robotic / Laparoscopic Nephrectomy; General Urology, Renal Stone medical and Surgical management including laser surgery;urinary tract infections;infertility; vasectomy; vasectomy reversal and incontinence.
Professor Nikhil Vasdev is a Consultant Urological Surgeon with a specialist interest in Robotic Urological Surgery and Surgical Urological Oncology at the Lister Hospital / Watford General Hospital (Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire Urological Cancer Centre) appointed in August 2014. My specialist interest is Urologic Oncology (Clinical and Academic). Professor Vasdev perform both robotic bladder and prostate cancer surgery (Robotic Prostatectomy / Robotic Prostectomy with intra-operative Frozen section of prostate (NeuroSAFE), Robotic Cystectomy) and kidney surgery (Robotic Partial nephrectomy / Robotic Nephrectomy and Robotic Pyeloplasty). Mr Vasdev also perform open/laparoscopic nephrectomy and open cystectomy with both ileal conduit and neobladders formation.
Prior to commencing my Consultant Urological Surgeon post, Professor Vasdev had completed a 2-year robotic urological fellowship at the Hertfordshire and South Bedfordshire Urological Cancer Centre, Lister Hospital. On the completion of his robotic urological fellowship he became the first UK nationally accredited Robotic Fellow by the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the British Association of Urological Surgeons.
To enhance his robotic urological skills Mr Vasdev also have also completed a “Visiting Fellowship” at the City of Hope National Medical Centre in Los Angeles, USA in robotic urological surgery which include robotic extended pelvic lymph node dissection, robotic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, robotic cystectomy with intracorporeal ileal conduit and neobladders formation and on-table robotic florescence techniques (Firefly™) technology for single kidney and complex robotic partial Nephrectomy. As a part of my robotic urological fellowship Mr Vasdev obtained a ChM (Urol) with a distinction from the University of Edinburgh / Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh for his thesis on the use of “Intraoperative frozen section of the prostate to reduce positive margin and improve nerve sparing during Robotic prostatectomy”. Mr Vasdev has a broad experience in basic science, clinical research and have had numerous successful research grants approved. Mr Vasdev’s basic science background as Clinical Research Associate at the National University of Singapore in Urology involved performing clinical trials and basic science research on gene therapy and immunotherapy for bladder cancer.
Professor Vadev has published extensively and have over 100 peer-reviewed articles, 175 abstracts, 10 book chapters, written 2 textbooks on Urological Cancers and am on the editorial board of 3 international urological journals. I also review for high impact factor journals including “The Lancet” and “The British Journal of Urology International”. Professor Vasdev’s current research interests focus on the early diagnosis, prevention and treatment of prostate / bladder and kidney cancer patients, identification of biomarkers high-risk prostate cancer patients, enhancing recovery/ quality-of life-issues in patients with prostate, bladder and kidney treatment, robotic nanotechnology and development of robotic intra-operative haptic feedback sensory technology. Mr Vasdev is an Associate Lecturer in Urology at the University of Cambridge where he leads Urological Medical Student teaching. Professor Vasdev is the Lead Clinical Tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh / University of Edinburgh for the ChM (Urol) degree for Prostate Cancer, Robotic Urology and New Technology. Professor Vasdev is the Network lead for the Lister Robotic Urology / Vatikutti Foundation, USA collaboration where he works closely to enhance patient care and are working on the development of model to help reduce the cost of robotic surgery in order for the benefits of technology to be available and affordable to patients in the developing world.
Mr Vasdev’s Urological surgical training includes basic surgical training at the National University Hospital, Singapore and Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Professor Vasdev then completed my 6 year Higher surgical training on type-1 national training number in Urology in the Northern Deanery, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK training at large teaching hospitals including the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne; James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough and Sunderland Royal Hospital, UK and robotic fellowship training at the Lister Hospital, UK and City of Hope national medical centre, USA.
As patients , Urology is one of the most varied branches of surgery. Find out more about urological conditions by following the link http://www.baus.org.uk/patients/
